Bulka brotforms are made in Germany from compressed spruce wood pulp. They are designed to hold bread dough while it is proofing during its final rise before being baked.

What is wood pulp?

Our wood pulp is made from fresh, sustainably sourced spruce, processed without any chemicals, using only water and pressure in a purely physical method.

Unlike cane, spruce is locally available, renewable, and has a smaller environmental footprint. The process retains lignin, a natural wood adhesive that helps hold the banneton’s structure together.

You may notice a yellowish tint or small spots. These are not defects but natural signs of lignin reacting to heat during drying. A mark of the material’s authenticity and purity.

How to use:

To start using your Bulka basket, gently sweep the inside of the basket with a clean, soft brush or cloth to clean off any wood pulp particles or dust.

When your bread dough is ready for shaping and final proof, sprinkle the inside of the basket with rise flour or potato starch powder, this will help to prevent the dough from sticking.

Place your prepared dough in the banneton upside down. For ideal proofing, you'll want to ensure that the seam of your dough is facing up.

As it proofs, cover your dough to keep moisture inside. Once it rises, flip your loaf onto a baking tray or whatever you use to bake bread (do not place Bulka basket in the oven). Score your dough and place it in the oven.

If your dough does not release easily, flouring may have been insufficient. Adjust your flouring next time or dust any visibly wet spots before proofing.

How to Care after use:

Before you store your Bulka basket, it must dry completely to avoid any mould formation.

The most efficent way of drying your basket is to use residual heat from the oven after baking your bread. At 210-250°F for 20-40 minutes the basket dries faster without being damaged. Once dry, brush the basket, if necessary, with a stiff but not too abrasive brush. For storage we recommend choosing a location with adequate ventilation. They can be stack when dry.

Don't wash it with water!
