Why Baking with Cast Iron
Becomes a Friction Point

The Cast Iron Reality
  • You wait 45–60 minutes just to start baking
  • You handle heavy, awkward cookware at high heat
  • Baking becomes something you plan around, not something you just do
  • Enamel chips and hides damage over time
  • Ongoing seasoning rituals or rust anxiety with every bake
There's a Better Way to Bake
  • Faster setup — oven and bread oven heat together
  • Easier, safer handling at high temperatures
  • Less friction from start to finish, every time
  • No coating layer to fail
  • No seasoning. No rust. No rituals.

Designed to Remove the Friction
from Sourdough Baking

Ready to Bake in ~15 Minutes, Not an Hour

1

Your oven and bread oven heat together — no separate long preheat required. Carbon steel reaches baking temperature faster than cast iron's heavy mass. The base of the Bulka Oven incorporates an aluminium core, which transfers heat much faster and distributes it more evenly across the baking surface.

Lightweight Design That Reduces Physical Strain

2

At around 8.5 lbs, Bulka is 2× lighter than a comparable cast iron bread oven. Pulling it from a 500°F oven doesn't test your grip or risk your wrists. Easier lifting means less strain, safer handling, and a more enjoyable baking experience.

Wiping the Bulka base clean with ease

No Seasoning Rituals. No Rust Anxiety.

3

The nitrided carbon steel surface is naturally rust-resistant and does not require seasoning. No oiling rituals, maintenance cycles, or worrying about damaging enamel coatings. After baking, simply hand wash, dry, and it’s ready for the next use.

Consistent Steam

4

The domed lid creates a built-in steam environment that helps support strong oven spring and crisp crust development. Designed to recreate the conditions artisan bakers rely on.

Fits the Bread You Want to Bake. Not the Other Way Around.

5

Designed to support both boules and batards without compromise. The wide shallow base and tall lid provide flexibility for different loaf sizes and styles.

Bread sling being used to transfer dough cleanly into the oven

Load Dough Easier Without the "Don't Drop It" Moment

6

The shallow base makes it easier to load, score, and remove bread without reaching deep into a dangerously hot pot. The included perforated bread sling helps transfer dough safely and cleanly while promoting better airflow for a more even crust.

Faster Heat - Less Energy Burned Per Bake

7

A shorter preheat means less gas or electricity per baking session. Over hundreds of bakes, that difference adds up in real money. Better results, less time, lower energy cost — every time you bake.

Why It Performs Differently
Nitrided Carbon Steel
No seasoning. No coating to degrade. Rust-resistant surface.
Thinner Construction
Less thermal mass than cast iron — ready to bake faster.
Aluminum Core
Even heat distribution — no hot spots, consistent crust.
Domed Lid
Natural steam chamber for proper oven spring and crisp crust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cast iron is the gold standard for bread baking. Can anything match it?

Bulka Carbon steel oven can. You get the same crust and oven spring, but with a faster preheat, less energy, and a pan you can actually lift.

Do I still get proper oven spring?

Yes. The tall, steam-locking lid creates a closed steam environment around the loaf — the same principle that makes cast iron effective. Strong oven spring and a crisp crust, every bake.

Does it need seasoning?

No. It's nitrided — no seasoning required before first use or after. Just bake.

Is it really easier to handle than cast iron?

Yes. At around 8.5 lbs, it's approximately half the weight of a similar-sized cast iron bread oven (15–20+ lbs). That difference is very noticeable when pulling a hot oven at arm's length.

Will it rust?

It's rust-resistant. If surface rust appears, it's superficial and easy to remove — it does not affect performance or safety in any way.

What is patina?

Patina is a natural mix of colour changes, marks, and surface patterns that build up from heat and steam over time. It's completely normal and does not affect performance. Like a good pan, it develops character with use.

What loaf shapes and sizes fit?

Designed to bake both round (boule) and oval (batard) loaves, from smaller everyday breads to larger artisan bakes.

Will it fit my oven?

Fits most standard home ovens. Check your interior width if you have a compact model — if you're unsure, reach out and we'll confirm before you order.

How hot can it go?

Up to 570°F (300°C) — fully within the range needed for high-heat sourdough baking.

Why choose this over cast iron?

Faster preheat, lighter and easier handling, no seasoning or enamel maintenance — while still delivering the oven spring and crust you expect. It's cast iron performance redesigned for the baker who wants great bread, not great gear maintenance.
